Sadness week 3: the QB cemetery
When I went to look up the QBs that have started for the Browns since the 1999 re-institution, I knew it would be a big list. It still managed to shock me just how bad it was. Considering the Packers list since 99 is probably just “Favre, Rodgers, and those two games Matt Flynn started”. The Giants have had Kerry Collins, Kurt Warner, some dude named Jesse Palmer, and Eli in the same time period. It really puts things in perspective for how hard it’s been in Cleveland.
I don’t have high expectations for Brian Hoyer. He did win this weekend, and threw 3 TDs, but I have to wonder if it was a product of the “new QB no one has seen and being unprepared for” syndrome. They also played the Vikings, a team that appears to be just above the New York Giants in terrible. I could be wrong, he could be the next Tom Brady, but I’m going by probabilities here. I hope he at least spanks the Steelers, who might be a step below the New York Giants in terrible. We’ll see.
Also this is the second time Brady Quinn has been on a tombstone in the Draw Play. I must be doing something right.
I can imagine the Miami wing of that cemetery…
Nice comic, but it’s always annoyed me that people consider backups failed QBs. Players like Hoyer and Thad were never intended to step in and be the future. I think it’s important to remember the Browns have only drafted three of those QBs in the first round, two being late in the round.
I almost didn’t find the Sexy Rexy but I did find it in the end.
And speaking of failed QBs… https://twitter.com/AdamSchefter/status/382847696241176576
Love the couch on Tim Couch’s stone, and the line on Weeden’s(Can’t entirely read it – “was too old for this world”?)
Didn’t know Sexy Rexy was quarterback for the Browns once.
He couldn’t be any worse then what they’ve had.
If Sexy Rexy was the Browns QB, they’d have a Super Bowl or two.
Nah. The way I always imagine the world ending is right in the middle of the field goal attempt that would give the Browns a Super Bowl win.
To be fair, it’s Doug pederson not peterson
Brian Hoyer was born the same day (October 13th, 1985) that Bernie Kosar got his first start as a Brown… Kosar won that game against the Oilers… Kosar wore number 19,while Hoyer is the 19th starting QB since the Browns returned in 1999… Now Hoyer in his first start beats the Vikings, whose only other loss at home to Cleveland came at the hands of- you guessed it- Bernie Kosar… I have no idea where I’m going with this. Go Browns.
While I don’t like our chances against the Browns this season (even if I hate the Browns far more than any other team in football) I have to argue that the Steelers are better than the Giants. The BIGGEST problem on the team lies in the offensive line, where the Giants share a problem. But the defense, I argue, is still better than the Giants’.
Basically the offenses are the same tier of crud, but the defensive edge would go to the Steelers.
It’s almost sad how prophetic this is. Will you do another one next week with Hoyer buried & Weeden rising from his grave?
I consider backups failed QBs since most sucked in college and the ones who didn’t suck get ran out the league because they are not automatically hall of famers. Mid-majors and FCS make the best backups and kickers. Basically the greatest non-athletic pro-athletes of all time.
And now Hoyer’s injured
That Jake Delhomme one hurt.
Not including Manziel and including Campell, the Browns had 20 different starting QBs through the end of 2013. My Dolphins were a close 2nd at 17, but at least we finally have a consistsnt starter
loool Seneca Wallace was the biggest fail. However, Brian Hoyer is killing right now with the Browns.
SOMEONE DID THIS!!!
