Seattle Rehabilitates Another Jet
It’s weird that Seattle will now be home to two separate famous Jets QB busts. Insert that “I’d have two nickles” meme. Maybe in a few years we will see Zach Wilson show up.
The first major move of the offseason came several weeks ago when Geno Smith was sent to the Raiders for a 3rd round pick. It reunites Geno with Pete Carroll, the coach who helped bring him back to relevance in Seattle two seasons ago. Geno had a career resurgence on the Seahawks, the kind of redemption most players dream of. He was written off for years after busting out on the New York Jets. He dropped a now famous soundbite. Geno still has his flaws, but he was unquestionably a competent QB and capable of being the guy. Seattle had rewarded him with a pretty fair contract for his achievements. Now he’s gone. Okay. Rebuild? Seattle also shipped off DK Metcalf to Pittsburgh. Okay. Gotta be a rebuild.
Then they signed Sam Darnold. Sam Darnold had his initial resurgence last year with the Vikings but it remains to be seen if that was a one year fluke (especially considering how it ended). I guess I’m just confused as to why Seattle bothered to get rid of Geno for…Geno 2. Darnold is a bit cheaper for sure, but he might also be worse. Geno has at least had several years in the system and has proven he wasn’t a fluke. Darnold was on a stud offense with good protection for most of the year throwing to JJ and Addison. Geno managed to do all he could under pressure thanks to the woeful Seattle line. Sam Darnold folded under pressure. They also shipped off one of their top weapons. However, Seattle wasn’t just selling. They were buying too.
They signed Cooper Kupp, who was surprisingly let go by the Rams. Kupp has struggled with injuries since his triple crown year but he’s probably still got plenty of gas in the tank. DeMarcus Lawrence from the Cowboys is also an excellent steal from Dallas. We can’t call this a rebuild, but we also can’t really call this all in. Maybe we should be introducing the term Remodel into the NFL offseason lexicon. The Seahawks are remodelling. They shifted stuff around. They kept the same house but painted the walls and changed some furniture that was getting crusty. They threw out some trash and bought some new trash at the nearby estate sale. I don’t know if the Seahawks got better, but they also didn’t really seem to get worse (unless Darnold reverts back to pumpkin form). They also now have an extra 3rd and 2nd rounder to work with.
Seems like Seattle is taking big risks by signing Darnold and Kupp. Both have a ton of potential and risk. They already knew what they were getting with Geno and Metcalf – a 7 to 10 win team that wouldn’t go higher than the divisional round.
Sounds like Feast or Famine to me. If it works, they’re the favorite to win the West and have a puncher’s chance at a Playoff Run. If it doesn’t, they have high draft picks to begin the rebuild.
I think the Rams are too good, even if the moves the Seahawks made work out, for the Seahawks to be the favorite of the West.
Let’s not forget that the Niners are still the Niners. When healthy they still have a ton of talent – if CMC is even close to his 2022 form they should do well and they have a lot of young WR talent to make up for Deebo leaving. I also have a buddy that seems to pick the Cards to win the West every year but it never works out. I don’t get it. He’s not even a Cards fan (that I know of)
Darnold and Kupp are streaky players so all they need is a big Streak at the end of the year. Their defense has improved enough.
Of course, as a Niners fan I don’t want to see this but, outside a complete implosion, they’re a more dangerous team.
The Seahawks got cheaper. Does that also mean they’re more dangerous now? I think that remains to be seen. Even if Darnold doesn’t lose a step in production this year he could very easily be embarrassed in the playoffs yet again, possibly even by the very same team.
If TheDarnold fails they can get A-a-ron next year….
What? Technicaly, he IS a failed Jets quarterback
Anyone not named Namath is a failed QB
That team headed by Ray Lucas that won most of their games the second half of the year was nasty tho. Had they made the playoffs, they could have won it all. Then Parcells left and the team fell apart.
Testaverde is the one exception. Also Pennington was good in even-numbered years.
DonĀ“t forget, the Seahawks also have a new OC in Klint Kubiak, who was pretty good given the circumstance in New Orleans. While Darnold did have a better supporting cast with the Vikings, the Seahawks do have a good variety of weapons and pieces on offense. But with a bad offensive line, this offense is going to be boom or bust.
Overall, the Seahawks are in decent shape, they have the pieces to next the step, but their lack of an offensive line and a truly dominant player prevents the from being contenders.
why’s darnold got a thing in his beard? is this a running gag I missed?
Darnold has a prominent birthmark on his face

Hope Darnold gets some help on that O-line.
One of the interesting things that has come out of the Geno trade is that it seemed like the Seahawks didn’t want to trade him. They probably wanted keep the guy they no over an unknown.
Another interesting thing is that we still haven’t heard of a new contract for Geno on the Raiders yet. The fact that hasn’t been done yet after a few weeks is at least noteworthy
Out of curiosity, what do you think would have happen had the Jets chose Marino in 1983?
I get the feeling we’d get people talking about how they should have chosen O’Brien to this day.
