Not that I endorse Brady pulling a Favre, of all things, but…
Honestly, I’m less surprised than when I first heard that he was retiring. He didn’t seem off at all, certainly a far cry from the sad mess Peyton was in his last season, or Big Ben was in his. He clearly looked like he could play a year or two more. His ‘last’ game showed he still clearly had it in him, only being thwarted by last-minute Stafford heroics.
At first I’d thought that this simply meant Brady’s contract with the Bucs was for two seasons, it ran out and he wasn’t willing to go look for a new team, but then I found that it was a 3-year contract so he actually had one more chance to win yet another ring without any more contracts. I recall being extremely puzzled when I found out. Observations about him being on a roll of winning a championship every two years these days(oh dear) aside, Brady’s a super-competitive person, obviously when he signed that contract he clearly meant playing for that full term as specified and he clearly hasn’t slowed down much, if at all. So why retire now?
Well, we got our answer; he’s not.
Maybe he really won’t retire until he actually becomes a hollow shell of himself, just like his old AFC rivals Peyton and Ben eventually did.
Honestly, who didn’t see this coming? He has been sending messages that this was a forced retirement from the onset. I just didn’t think he would tell his family to F off this soon. He is the 2nd coming of Favre.
I mean, he never gifted your team an ridiculous interception to get you to the Super Bowl, so he’s not quite Favre. But in that case he would’ve thrown the pick that let your team face him, so the logic gets pretty tortured if you try to follow it too far. =)
His off-handed off-season retirement was suspiciously off-brand and there was no way his ego would allow it.
It demands an entire year of fawning adulation after his announcement at the BEGINNING of next season.
I’m confused which Tom Brady you guys have been watching. Both he and those who’ve been around him for any amount of time said that he’s not the type to want that kind of “Mariano Rivera retirement tour”. This is a guy who’s first national commercial spent more time focusing on his offensive lineman than him, and the basic joke of his most recent one (Subway) is that he’s not even important enough for them to mention. I’m sure he does have an ego, but compared to a ton of other athletes out there, I’m not seeing the evidence of it being larger-than-most.
Tom Brady haters in 2022 are weird. The dude was literally pissed off the news got leaked in the first place because he didn’t want to steal anybody’s thunder.
This might come off as rude, but it’s the made up, turbo-asshole egomaniac version of Tom Brady that they’ve created to justify their strong dislike of him.
Don’t get me wrong, Tom Brady is not a particularly likeable guy and he’s certainly got an ego, but he’s never struck me as the type to even entertain a retirement tour. The dude wouldn’t even let his teams stop play to celebrate a personal accolade if he hit one midgame, so I honestly doubt he’d be okay with a major distraction like a whole farewell season. The timing of his retirement announcement was odd because he seems more like a guy that would rather retire 2 years too late to avoid retiring 1 year too early. Doesn’t have much to do with his ego, if anything at all.
I had a feeling he would come back. Just not this soon. Still, I’d rather watch him play and make dad jokes on Twitter than see him shill crypto and sell overpriced clothing.
I probably should have clarified that I’d rather see him do both than ONLY shill crypto. It’s more tolerable when I can at least enjoy watching him play on Sundays.
Trevor Noah made a pretty good joke about that, pointing out how his unretirement actually makes the football more interesting.
Person 1: “Hey, want to see Tom Brady’s last touchdown football?”
Person 2: “Meh.”
vs.
Person 1: “Hey, want to see the worst purchase of all time?”
Person 2: “Hell yeah I do!”
Now that I think about overshadowing probable rapists, what if Ben’s constantly been calling him to please unretire so he won’t overshadow his HoF induction and Brady just finally got fed up with it and decided he’d rather deal with Gisele’s nagging than that?

Personally I was hoping he was gonna stay in retirement for a year and then sign with some historically cursed team (Browns, Lions, Jags, etc) and take them to the superbowl. It was never gonna happen and if not the Bucs he would’ve signed with the 49ers or something but c’mon, TB12 taking the BROWNS to the top would be absolutely hilarious.
No wait, he signs with the Commies and some way, somehow, sends Snyder back into the abyss where he belongs. His greatest contribution to the sport right there.
Brady wanted out of Tampa. Arians has reached the point where he cannot control himself much less the team, and anyways their roster is going to take some hits. The team wouldn’t let him go, so he retired, hoping he could then unretire on the condition that Tampa trade him. Tampa called his bluff, so now he has to come back and play another year to escape them, or give up football for good.
Supposedly Brady “retired” to pressure the Bucs to trade him to Miami where he was going to join Sean Payton to make his final run. Flores suing the league derailed that plan, and the Bucs called Brady’s bluff by refusing to trade him, so he came back.
Or maybe after hanging around the house being underfoot of Giselle for two months, she had enough and made him go back to work.
Fuck you Thom
Just when I thought I could enjoy the game again, I emerge from MinamiCon 27 to find the world is still on fire…
…and then THIS.
Fuck You Tom.
If anything, it’s a reasonable reaction to three children demanding your attention.

Comic up mere hours after the news broke…
Confirmed for Dave knew it was happening and already had the comic ready.

Kansas City says hi
Damn. You’ve got me dead to rights. MY ENTIRE LIFE IS A LIIIIEEEE!!!!!! *tries to tear shirt off and runs around yard screaming*
…unless he starts small, by swapping out his UGHs for a tractor. Hmmmmmm.
It was annoying with Favre and it’s annoying with Brady. Fuck this blatant attention seeking.

LOL he was pissed the news got leaked because he wanted to receive his roster bonus and had to wait a week to do so.
This might come off as rude, but it’s the made up, turbo-asshole egomaniac version of Tom Brady that they’ve created to justify their strong dislike of him.

Welcome back, Tom.
Since when has playing stopped him from doing commercials? I expect he will do both.
I probably should have clarified that I’d rather see him do both than ONLY shill crypto. It’s more tolerable when I can at least enjoy watching him play on Sundays.
The person who spent half a million dollars on his last touchdown ball is royally pissed off. lol
good

I mean, at least he lasted longer than AB
Also Deshaun Watson is no longer the story coming out of the weekend and fuck that guy

If you retire and unretire in the span of 2 months, you have a big ego.
When I first heard this I was hoping it was some sort of big coup for the USFL… but I suppose Brady would triple the league’s budget.
Probably my favorite commentary ever. Also, my exact thought when the news broke. It’s like Dave read everyone’s mind at once.
Personally I was hoping he was gonna stay in retirement for a year and then sign with some historically cursed team (Browns, Lions, Jags, etc) and take them to the superbowl. Tom Brady banishing Snyder to the shadow realm is one of the few things he could ever do that’d make me cheer for him
Yes…ha ha ha…YES!
Philip Rivers: “What a lightweight.”
Brett Favre: Plagiarist.
If you find this vexing, imagine the guy who paid 500,0000+ dollars for his last ever TD pass football.
What if Tom came back just to troll that guy…
It seems to me like what happened is:
Brady wanted out of Tampa. Arians has reached the point where he cannot control himself much less the team, and anyways their roster is going to take some hits. The team wouldn’t let him go, so he retired, hoping he could then unretire on the condition that Tampa trade him. It’s gonna be really funny if he goes to Pitt, but my guess is San Fran.
Supposedly Brady “retired” to pressure the Bucs to trade him to Miami where he was going to join Sean Payton to make his final run. Flores suing the league derailed that plan, and the Bucs called Brady’s bluff by refusing to trade him, so he came back.
