Groundhog Jets
The alarm goes off. It’s 6am. Ryan Fitzpatrick groans, hits the off button, and gets up. In the shower he goes over the upcoming meetings in his head. He knows his worth to the Jets. He almost took them to the playoffs. He has a right to a large contract. After all, do they really want to deal with Geno? Yes, they are short on cash, but that just means that it can be a long term deal instead of a front heavy one. Something to ensure the rest of his career is financially secure. He can still play for a while. He hasn’t taken the beating that many other players have, not yet. Plus, he’s a Harvard grad, he has many more brain cells that have to die for him to become a vegetable. The meeting does not go well. Neither side will budge. The Jets are pushing the possibility of Geno starting. They need to sign their defensive stars. This is Fitz’s last great chance to nail a big contract. Maybe things will go better tomorrow.

I’m kinda excited to see what Geno does. He was looking decent in camp last year until Enemkpali decked him from what I understand, maybe getting benched was the push he needed to get his ass in gear. Stranger things have happened than quarterbacks needing a few years to get acclimated to the NFL.
I do love Fitzpatrick though. The world needs more smart color commentary men, I really hope he goes into TV once he retires.
People forget that Geno got this team to an 8-8 season his rookie year. He had a couple amazing games where he looked like the future of the franchise. Of course they were overshadowed by some pretty bad games, but the previous choosing staff hamstrung him and his development so badly he couldn’t even play.
Young QBs get written off for little to no reason all the time. It just becomes accepted knowledge for some reason that they’re bad. Just look at Mike Glennon. Had a couple good seasons on a really bad team, next thing you know he’s benched for McCown and then they draft Winston.
I’m a little torn on Fitz. He certainly has his limitations but can certainly sling it for a while. The problem is when you ask him to put the team on his back, he rushes and makes horrible decisions, like his 3 interceptions in the finale.
Neither side is going to get a better deal anywhere else.
Come on Jets, let GeNOOOOO! start.
Ok, but face it the team didn’t have the stifling defense it had in it’s 2009/2010 playoff run years, Revis was no shutdown last year. Objectively speaking the QB play you got from Fitz last year is the best the Jets have seen since Chad Pennington in 2002…
He deserves some money but he needs to give half of it to IK Imrvkvelekcvwck (sorry I don’t remember his name)
I love Fitz to death (he actually made me like the Jets (well, that and I started him in fantasy for a while)), but with Jets starting actually be good, I hope they roll with Geno. The less competition for New England, the better.
I love how the Jest are bungling this situation. Forget Fitzy. What they’re doing is sending the message to the locker room that it doesn’t matter if you single-handedly swooped in to save them from another circus Jets season, they are going to screw you as far as the market allows them to.
Welcome to the NFL where the Billionaire owners have all the power, and everything is money issue regardless of skill… At least it’s better than the NBA where the Players Assoc. and the CBA have such a stranglehold on the franchises that most teams have at least one superstar who can phone it in while making max salary and still get the coach fired or a teammate traded at the drop of a hat…
Dave, do you personally think Fitzpatrick deserves more money? Even though the “general consensus” disagrees? I think so, he’s bounced from team to team, and on every team he’s on, the FO is looking for a better QB. I think he’s really underrated, almost like the bizarro Eli Manning. They’ve both been around for 10+ years, but Eli was a first-rounder who was handed the QB tenure on a silver platter, while Ryan is a journeyman late-rounder. He represents the ugly chick in high school that goes out with nerdy guys to make them feel better.
Maybe that last sentence was unnecessary
I think he deserves some money but probably not the amount he’s asking for. I don’t blame him for asking though, he probably knows this is his last great chance at a good contract.
Fitz can play well but he has never led his team to more than mediocre success and no playoffs. He has proven a valuable stop gap but as a long term starter? No. He seems to play better when his job is very much at risk. When he’s the man, things seem to fall apart.
Last I paid attention to this story, the Jets offered him a 24-million dollar deal for 3 years, with 12 million coming the first year. Fitz’s counter-offer was 1 year, 12 million. I haven’t heard anything else since, but this was in May and again, I haven’t been paying attention.
Having Fitzpatrick as your QB is like having a successful gambling streak in Vegas, then blowing it all on your final gamble. You won more along the way, but in the end you’re left empty-handed, just like the guy who lost every time. The journey may be different, but the destination is the same. Fitzpatrick had the best QB season in Jets history last year, but in the most important quarter of the 70 or so quarters he played he threw three backbreaking interceptions, including one in the red zone when a field goal would’ve taken the lead.
Take the pay cut, Fitz. You blew the big contract in the 4th quarter of week 17.
Jets fans are embracing Geno Smith LOL
I know it’s hilarious and as a Pats fan I love it. (despite the fact that somehow in 2014 we managed to make Geno look pretty good in both games against him… -___-)
pretty brutal abuse of ctrl+c ctrl+v
He was Fitzmagic pretty much all year last year so maybe he’s broken the cycle.
Hah just kidding.
The Jets are doing Fitz wrong. Pay da man, or don’t. Either way they’re aren’t winning the division until Coach Darth Sidious and his GQ cover model in New England are broken up.
As of 2022, Jets still haven’t won the division.
