Megatron’s Hall of Fame Speech
Back when Megatron was holding out in his feud with the Lions, a move that ultimately ended in his retirement, I had a bad take. I thought his short career wasn’t quite Hall of Fame worthy. Even if I’m the only one who even remembers making that take (likely not, I’m sure some bitter Lions fan somehow kept track of it, this is the internet after all where no sin goes unpunished), I’m glad I finally got a chance to amend that bonehead take and see a much deserving player make the hall first ballot. Calvin absolutely deserves to be in the Hall and I’m glad possibly the WR icon of this era has a bust in Canton.
I think it was mostly that I personally value longevity quite a bit and Calvin is the textbook opposite type of hall of famer. He’s a guy who shined incredibly bright for a relatively short period of time. He’s not very high on any career lists, but you can’t deny that when he was at his peak, he was an absolute monster of a player that nobody could stop. It’s almost a crime that he never got to experience a single post-season win while he spent years toiling away on those Lions teams. Looking back on the iconic WRs of his era (Julio, Fitz, Andre Johnson, AJ Green), I’d have a hard time putting any of them above Johnson except maybe Fitz, mostly due to Fitz’s longevity for a similarly terrible franchise. Johnson deserves to be the symbol of great pass catchers from this time in history. In terms of talent you could throw him up there with Moss and Rice with ease. If you wanted to argue that he’s a top 5 WR of all time, I’m not sure I’d exactly agree, but I’d be more than willing to entertain the argument.
Johnson notably did not thank the Lions during his acceptance speech. He thanked the fans. He thanked teammates and coaches. He did not thank the organization or people up top at all. His speech was pretty good overall. I had no idea how much pain Johnson apparently played with due to a back injury which almost certainly had to have played a role in his shorter career. Honestly, it was the most I’ve ever heard Johnson speak at any time and I was surprised he didn’t just walk up, say “thanks”, then walk off. He was always a quiet guy who let his play do the talking.
Johnson’s feud with the Lions apparently stems from them asking him to return part of his signing bonus after he retired, which was pretty horseshit, but the fact that he’s still clearly mad at them for it makes me wonder how much more was going on we don’t know about. I doubt he’s ever going to write a book about it since he doesn’t seem like the type, so wild speculation is our friend! My guess is that Calvin is team Jacob but Martha Ford is team Edward.
Stray thoughts on the rest of Hall of Fame weekend: My favorite moment was Peyton Manning saying “my friend Tom Brady is here” and the entire crowd booing. Peyton’s speech overall was actually pretty disappointing, he spent half of it talking about how football must be preserved and treasured at all costs and it just felt like a weird angle to take, for him, at that moment, to a crowd full of people who likely already very much agreed to begin with. I loved Charles Woodson struggling to keep it together. I like my hall of fame speeches two ways: flippant and fun as they take in the moment, or overly emotional. I love it when the inductees share personal anecdotes and how those stories shaped their careers. My eyes roll out of the back of my head when they start talking like coaches or motivational speeches giving boring platitudes “HARD WORK IS HARD AND YOU GOTTA FIGHT THE FIGHT” shut up and tell me why your mom mattered to you I can get the hard work grind mindset garbage anywhere. Shut up John Lynch.
In my view the Lions messed up in asking for the money back. He is their best wide receiver of all time and now they want to pay him the money back in exchange for some signings here and there. Ummm they should had just asked him to do that to begin with. Seriously bad business.
To be fair, I don’t think that it was that much of a stretch to question if Megatron was an HoFer back in 2016. His longevity was a real issue and while he was incredible for the 9 seasons that he played, it was still only 9 seasons. Barry Sanders seems like an obvious comparison but even then, Barry had him beat badly in terms of accolades (double the 1st team all-pros, 2 OPOYs, MVP, etc.). Not Calvin Johnson’s resume wasn’t bad at all, but if you told me he’d be a 1st ballot HoF 5 years ago, I’d have probably doubted it too.
That being said, I have no complaints about it. He’s a great dude and absolutely deserves his gold jacket and bust in Canton. I’m happy for him.
Jerry Rice’s HOF acceptance speech was also pretty incredible. This is the part that struck me:
“I’m here to tell you that the fear of failure is the engine that has driven me throughout my entire life. It flies in the faces of all these sports psychologists who say you have to let go of your fears to be successful and that negative thoughts will diminish performance. But not wanting to disappoint my parents, and later my coaches, teammates and fans, is what pushed me to be successful.”
I’m really happy for Megatron, He was my favorite player, (besides AJ Green), when I was growing up. I’m really disappointed in how the Lions ruined his career and I didn’t know about the whole science bonus crap and that’s ridiculous. This whole situation makes me really hope we don’t waste CMC’s prime and he ends up in one of these conversations. Overall Congrats Megatron, you deserve it.

There’s also another massive, underrated, superstar WR in the hall this year by the name of Harold Carmichael. He was the megatron before megatron.
I thought Michael Thomas was the single season receptions leader. Isn’t Megatron the single season _yardage_ leader?
Yeah, Megatron’s tied for 10th: https://www.pro-football-reference.com/leaders/rec_single_season.htm
As much as I’m excited about this year… This just reminds me that I miss all those players who retired early. Such as Luck, Calvin, Pat McAfee, Jake Butt, etc
And Joe Thomas… That was where I was going with that.
Megatron was perpetually in this weird place of being an absolute ICON at his position, but being far behind in many statistical categories compared with his peers. He was undoubtedly a Hall of Famer to anybody who watches the game because he passed the eye test in the way guys like TO and Moss passed the eye test. There’s a mythos around the name “Megatron”. If you were picking a team of wide receivers, I think you go Moss and Jerry, and then there’s a strong case to put Calvin in there as well.
However, statistically he’s in the ball park of guys like Roddy White, Chad Johnson, and Hines Ward for receiving yards and guys like Anquan Boldin and Jimmy Graham for TDs. Not a First ballot, but also undeniably a first ballot. I probably wouldn’t have put him in on the first go around, but I’m not unhappy that they gave him that honor.
To me he is a HoFer, but not first ballot. First ballot means is no brainer type inclusions. Like even people who don’t follow sports have heard of you. Calvin Johnson was amazing, but not quite as dominant as we remember. He only had a three year stretch (coinciding with Matt Stafford becoming full time starter) of “best we’ve ever seen” type discussions before injuries dragged him back down to merely good.
“thank you all but not to the Fords'” – Megaton alternate reality
Megatron is easily a top 10 all-time wide out, so it makes sense he would be first ballot.
My favourite memory of Megatron is when he just stood there watching Optimus Grimes out-OBJ OBJ, going full stretch while a clear two feet airborne, to pick his ass off on a wildly mis-targeted Stafford pass.
Detroit wasted both their legends, Barry & Megatron, and they know it.
Might have wasted 3 legends. Stafford isn’t really that old. It’s very possible he blows up on the Rams and catches the league on fire the way Brees did when he joined the Saints. McVeigh is far and away the best coach Stafford has ever played under, and there is still a ton of talent on the Rams.
dave, have you SEEN THIS FUCKING PHOTO
