We Shall Not Speak Of The Washington Team
MERCH FOR THE WASHINGTEAM IS ON SALE NOW!
I’m not gonna lie, I’m pretty tempted to pick something up. If I wasn’t a fan of an explicit division rival and also morally opposed to giving the NFL my money, this would actually be a great thing to pick up. The Washington Football Team is stated as a temporary name, and that means the Washington Team merch will be inherently a limited edition piece of history. If I was a more neutral fan or a WFT fan, I’d be scooping up some WFT swag. It will be a neat little bit of team lore, even more interesting than having classic old Skins branded merchandise.
I also must admit that I kind of like the Washington Football Team. It has a classic vintage style to it, or something closer to a soccer club name. It is more interesting than most names and will probably be more interesting than whatever generic name they actually do go with. I love what they did with the uniform too, using the jersey number as the helmet icon. I think they’d look even more classic with no number, but it’s a pretty effective version of their now former look.
If all of this didn’t feel like a blatant way to try and gain back some goodwill and cover up the story of the organization being a misogynistic trash fire I’d be pretty stoked! Please do not let this neat little thing distract you from remembering that the WFT organization is a pile of shit.

Since this is a Harry Potter reference and JK Rowling is a TERF jackass, here’s some donation links to support trans people, because trans people are people

EDIT: Friday’s comic will go up Next Week, I came down with some serious stomach issues last night and couldn’t finish it
Still can’t believe you didn’t like the story to the last of us.
They should rename Washington to be “The Overrated Cliche Stories”
first one was great. flawed, but great
second one was just… eh
Ultimate irony being, their colours are totally Gryphondoor.
You need to make your own merch with Washington Team That Shall Not Be Named on it.
seriously
id buy it
They had the copyrights stripped from the Washington Redskins logo a few years ago, I wonder if it applies to the temporary brain-fart version, too. I remember South Park doing an absolutely merciless take down with the logo plastered up everywhere when it got stripped. Hahaha, this has aged so well. “Go Fund Yourself!”

That’s been undone by SCOTUS via the “Slants” case where they said denying trademarks for offensiveness violates the First Amendment.
Aw, man, I must have had my head up my ass when that happened. ='( Thanks for updating me.
Guess that explains why they didn’t change the name sooner. I figured losing the copyright would have been enough of a kick in the money bags to do it, but if it was restored, it all makes sense.
I feel like this is probably what you already have planned but can you do a comic about Hightower and the other players opting out if this season?
That’s going to be an ongoing story so I think I’ll probably get to it soon but not this week most likely
The deadline is next Wednesday, so I expect something on Friday the 7th.
That Kraken reveal tho
Any book 6 spoiler?
Snyder kills dumbledore
“… because trans people are people”
I’m so sad that this still needs to be said. Thanks for being awesome, Dave.
I guess you are unaware TERF is considered a slur now. You gotta use the older term ‘gender critical feminist’.
Underneath a comic about the Washington name controversy; irony of the highest order.
Don’t get Karen on me
Just trying to help you navigate tricky waters. As far as style guides go, The Economist is highly influential and they have TERF on their list of unacceptable slurs they will never print.
I think my issue with it being considered a slur is that it isn’t even a word. It’s technically an acronym, so I’m not surprised a publication using more classic style guides won’t use it. It’s basically slang. Do they refuse to publish the description Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminist? Because written out like that, it seems pretty much the same amount of offensive as saying Gender Critical Feminist. TERF is just a way to not have to type that out the whole time.
It does however have the internet problem of being overused as an insult to anyone you don’t agree with, similar to Karen or SJW, or Cuck, or even Nazi.
I don’t agree with how the word gets thrown around willy nilly, but in Rowling’s case it is a pretty explicitly accurate description of her beliefs. I know I’ve always considered slurs to be words that refer to inherent genetic traits or things a person cannot control as a way to deem them as a lesser person, like how the former Washington name is about skin color and how skin color is used against a person, even though that person cannot control it. TERF is more about a person’s ideology, which you do have control over. I’m willing to change my opinion on it but to me it feels like a lot of the anger around TERF is that it is frequently used as a way to insult people, which is something almost every word or term could be theoretically used for. Is Liberal or Conservative a slur? I’ve seen them used much the same way people use TERF to insult and hate other people.
In debating whether it’s a slur or not I guess you could say people are ……………………………………………………………
Beefin’ over TERF
“In debating whether it’s a slur or not I guess you could say people are ……………………………………………………………
Beefin’ over TERF”
Would you say it’s a TERF war?
if any group ever deserves to be offended against, it’s TERFs. they want respect, then they need to respect all others, including transwomen.
shut the fuck up terf
First off, I know I need a new name…
Secondly, “The Washington Red Eyes”… boom! Team name solved. Couldn’t hurt for Snyder to actually play up this whole “Team who shall not be named” bit, which might even bring in some new fans for this dumpster fire organization.
Does the helmet just weep when a fan gets sorted into the Browns fandom?
At this point I think we’re pretty much all legacies anyway.
The Washington Post ran an interesting op-ed on how Washington and Lee University shouldn’t just drop Lee but also Washington as part of the name since Washington was a slaveowner. Somewhat ironic given the name of the publication but they’ve been critical in the resistance against Drumpf so I would bet they’d be willing to change their own name too. It really opened my eyes to how evil the founding fathers were. And most of us got brainwashed in our childhood to celebrate them. Just burn the whole country down and start over.
I promise this is semi-related to football: I would love to see the Washington Football team rename as the Douglass *whatever acceptable mascot they come up with*. (For those who don’t know, Douglass Commonwealth is the proposed statehood name for D.C. should it ever win its right to become a state, though that would require Rethuglicans to lose the Senate. I also have some reservations about using the term Commonwealth since it evokes a since of white British superiority and rule over non-white populations…but we can’t make all necessary process overnight, I suppose.) We should really stop using Washington as a positive term though, and the team should take that step forward.
Also, yes, J.K. Rowling is a horrible person. I died inside when I found out she hates trans PEOPLE. I had planned on passing on the books I read as a child to my future children, but I don’t want to give her any more power. It’s time to start cancelling these people in meaningful ways beyond twitter. Don’t let hate leave a legacy.
Can you elaborate about Washington being a scumbag? It’s my understanding that, aside from owning slaves (and I’ll get to that in a second), he was a pretty decent person. In fact the more I learn, even sorting through the propaganda, the more I respect the guy and am in sheer amazement that someone actually moral could get into a place of power *and* maintain his integrity.
Regarding his slave ownership, it’s my understanding that it wasn’t really his choice, and that even as the #1 most powerful person in the country, under Virginia law he couldn’t free his slaves until his death (which he then did). Now maybe that’s a cop-out, maybe he could’ve thrown his weight around more. From my armchair it sure seems like it! But that’s what I’ve heard from more knowledgable people who seem to accept it as a valid reason.
Aside from that dilemma, the fact that he VOLUNTARILY GAVE UP POWER when everyone wanted him not to, that alone is miraculous and I think an unquestionably admirable quality. Had that ever been seen before… in like, all of history?
Of course, no one is perfect, no one should be idolized. But I definitely do respect the man, and even sorting through the propaganda love for our founding fathers, he seems to be a truly unique and impressive person.
Agree with you about the founding fathers in general though. I’m especially tickled by Hamilton’s newfound popularity. It’s well earned, cause that’s a fun musical, but somehow all the emphasis on him being an immigrant who had to fight for everything he got… kinda overlooks the fact that he got quite a bit, and most of his actions “for the country” directly profited him, and oh yeah he & his friends were all rich/bankers. I think a lot of his new fans would think twice if they realized he’s basically like if a Koch Brother had an official government job
After the Romans voluntarily giving up power was rare, but among Washington and his contemporaries there was sort of a cult of Cincinnatus (a Roman general that briefly became a dictator during an invasion that retired to his farm), and there were alot of comparisons made between Washington and Cincinnatus at the time.
Also Washington was getting tired of having to mediate between the feuding factions that were developing around Jefferson and Hamilton.
Very interesting, thanks. Viewing it through the Roman lens is interesting. It seems like Cincinnatus was well regarded for doing that too, so I’m assuming the contemporary comparison was as a compliment? And was that more of a post-presidency comparison or do you mean that there was always a sentiment that he wanted to relinquish his power & leadership?
Doing a little dive on Cinci now (and hey, that’s why the Bengals play in Cincinnati, cool). Thanks for pointing me at a new interesting piece of history I didn’t know 🙂
Robert E. Lee was the president of the school and helped to save the school during Reconstruction, and the name is because of that. With that it’s a tricky situation, because it’s pretty much the only school that has any kind of legitimate claim to naming itself after him. They should probably drop their Bob and George secondary logo in any case though.
I still think the new name is going to start with an R so they can use their old “R” stylized logo. What sounds the same as their old name but is different?
Washington Raisins
Washington Reactions
Washington Recession
Washington Retsyn (let’s go, mighty flecks found in Certs breath mints!)
Washington Retchings?
I heard a great name idea- the Washington Red Stars. If you look at the D.C. flag, there are three red stars. I like the idea for the same reason I dislike the Redtails, Redwolves, etc.- the name should be unique to the city. There’s nothing that says “D.C.” about those other names, but Red Stars would be a very D.C. name.
Mr Rappocio, here is an article that will hopefully educate you on where J.K. Rowling stands with this. Have a good day sir! https://www.jkrowling.com/opinions/j-k-rowling-writes-about-her-reasons-for-speaking-out-on-sex-and-gender-issues/
You realize this article is one of the many reasons me and so many people have an issue with her, right? We all read this, it more or less confirmed that she doesn’t get it and that she’s going to double down, and it got rightfully torn apart.
yeah that article doesnt say what you think it says
