The Death Of The Beautiful Jimmy Garoppolo
Jimmy dead.
So much for all that hype. It wasn’t even a noble death, like getting sacked in the face of extreme pressure but delivering a shot or scrambling over the middle of the field. It was a shameful death. Brought on by trying to get an extra yard instead of running out of bounds, even though he was nowhere near a first down. Just like that, his knee took a turn, and now Jimmy dead. RIP Jimmy.
At least his beautiful handsome face remains unblemished.
The 49ers and Jimmy were getting far too much hype during the offseason anyway honestly. A lot of it was of course tongue in cheek, but fans are dumb and winning makes it easy to forget the flaws or hitches you see in a game. Jimmy rarely looked stupendous last year but he won 6 straight so WHO CARES SUPER BOWL BABY. I remember when Tebow won like 6 games in a row too. All that winning made a lot of people overlook that he was still one of the worst QBs in the NFL during that span. Hell right now you can see evidence of it hitting Baker Mayfield. Baker played one excellent half of football and he’s already being hailed a savior and people are saying “they were wrong he’s good”. One half of football. Put the brakes on, man. I want Baker to be the answer as much as everyone does but one half of football don’t mean jack.
(This is secret code for me telling all my twitter followers to stop asking me to draw Baker slaying the Browns hydra, let the dude prove he should be slaying it first)
The 49ers fans have nothing to really look forward to now. I guess they can watch for other developing players. Hey, Rueben Foster? Matt Breida is cool, if he’s not completely dead. Fred Warner seems good. Well, they might still be good enough to win second place in the division? The Hawks are garbage and the Cardinals might be the worst team in the league this year. I guess we get to see if CJ Beathard is the future of stopgap quarterbacks. How thrilling. CJ Beathard has one victory under his NFL belt. Last year’s Ben McAdoo led 3-13 Giants.
COMIC SCHEDULE UPDATE
-No comic tomorrow. I don’t want to hear any complaining you got 5 straight comics this week and THREE of them were fully rendered. In a row. You aren’t going to get that lucky again.
-Next week I will be trying out the schedule I proposed earlier this week. Regular comics on Wed/Fri, plus a Checkdown on Monday. There may be more checkdowns during the week, but it will depend on how inspired I am. My goal is to eliminate the Saturday comic (And a busy Friday night when I usually just want to rest after a work week) as they’ve always been significantly less read than my Tues/Thurs ones, and to give myself the ability to more quickly react to Sunday’s games. Also, to give the bigger ideas more time to gestate so I’m not trying to rush out an idea for Tuesday. I have to start working on Tuesday comics Sunday night, which isn’t a big deal in the offseason but is very difficult during the regular season because I’m too entranced with the action to properly formulate a decent idea. Then on Monday I’m rushing it. I want to stop that. So next week is going to be a change and we’re gonna see how it goes.
Hey at least we get to see the REAL Big Dick Nick be our backup now
by that I mean Nick Mullens, who is totally so much better than Smol Pole Foles
And thus, the legendary run of dave ends
Derek Anderson played ONE FULL SEASON of very good football for the browns, leading them 10-6 in 2007. Where is he now? People love jumping to conclusions.
And to rub salt in the wounds the best backup the Niners have is CJ Beathard get ready for a 4 win season niners
Honestly each one of these comics is a gift and I’m grateful to get them at all. One of the only chances to celebrate with fellow football nerds. Thanks, Dave!
This week we have been so blessed by the football gods to have been given such great comics, fully rendered! Huzzah and thank you Dave. Enjoy your weekend. Looking forward to a new schedule. Any one who doesn’t like change and who disagrees with Dave’s choice here, please see above comic. Not on what to do, but choose how you probably feel inside.
No complaints here about the new schedule. It works well with my “times where I can reasonably expect to be on the internet” and, ALMOST as importantly, it works better for you.
Lol, they didn’t have the right size. So we roll with CJ! 😉
Too bad, it would have been interesting to see what he could do in full season. At least we won’t have to hear about “Belichick’s mistake” for the time being.
Dave, I enjoy the comics, so any schedule that keeps us getting good comics and doesn’t burn you out is a good one. It makes sense too if that few people were reading the Saturday ones.
The Chargers are on pace for a good season. Scoring points, not having half the roster injured, Anthony Lynn is a decent coach. However, we have had too many injuries, which raises my suspicion. Another key play will probably go down. Derwin James has 2 sacks, could be him. Gordon is a tank in the backfield, maybe him too.
Hopefully no one else gets hurt, but I never tell myself the truth, so I can’t wait to see what the wheel lands on next week
Openly jinxing key players… no wonder we’re cursed. Did you have to mention Derwin??
At this point, I don’t consider it openly jinxing people. I think that’s just accepting the eventual turn of reality. If it doesn’t happen, that end of the season run could be a good one.
No complaints about the new schedule — makes a lot of sense to me.
My main goal is reading the comics. So if this helps keep you producing them and helps prevent you from burning out, I’m all for it.
As a 9ers fan, I recognized the hype for this team was overblown. With a healthy Jimmy G, we were still likely only a .500 team. With any luck we could have had a wildcard, but the odds of that greatly diminished when McKinnon tore his ACL. Now we are likely looking at a season with 5 to 7 wins. We play AZ and SEA twice each, the Raiders, and overrated middle-tier teams including the Bucs, Giants, and Broncos. From that pool of 8 games there’s probably 4-6 wins.
That aside, it’s worth noting that Garoppolo only won 5 games last year for the 9ers. Also maligning Beathard seems a little odd. The guy is a third round pick in his second season and won one of his five starts (a .200 win percentage)… and yet he’s compared to a former head coach??? one who had a .188 win percentage last year. That feels like an apples to oranges comparison
I think you missed the direction of the McAdoo thing. I’m not comparing him to McAdoo at all. I’m saying his only win came against a really shit team run by a bad coach, so it isn’t very noteable.
You’re right, he’s not a bust or anything because he’s just a random third rounder. But Jimmy G won 5 games with the same team around him.
It’s a big drop in potential talent between the two players. They really don’t have a whole lot of premier receiving options and they’ve been banged up at skill position anyways. I think in the long run, this won’t be as bad as Niner fans think. Good draft capital. The team is trending up despite Jed York and The Full Season Mike Tomsula Experience.
Beathard though…..his one win was against Ben McAdon’t-do-anything-right. It’s a win, but that’s not something to brag too much about. Although I do wonder if one day we can get a McAdoo-Tomsula buddy comedy….
Just want to say I love this comic so the only thing that sucks about the new schedule is me getting used to it!
anyone who bitches at you for doing thedrawplay your way is an entitled crybaby and best ignored.
keep rockin’, dave.
Hell, Mayfield doesn’t even have to be the savior of the Browns for him to slay the hydra. He just needs to be the starter long enough for the QB turnstile to end. That was the whole point of the hydra in the first place from how I’m seeing it.
Gotta revisit this for the line
