Terrell Owens Finally Gets In The Hall Of Fame
Have you ever seen those gifs of cats clawing and whining to be let outside and then once the owner opens the door, they just sit there and don’t go? Terrell Owens’ response to his HoF induction reminds me of that.
T.O. 100% belongs in the football hall of fame. I’m glad he made it. He’s unquestionably one of the greatest football players in history. I really don’t think that can be disputed, even by his haters. T.O. could play some goddamn ball. But man he is such a turd.
There’s a part of me that kind of respects how he apparently will not attend the hall of fame ceremony and will celebrate his own way. I like watching stuffy old shirts get told off, it’s delightfully punk. T.O. has always gone to the beat of his own drum and enjoyed life on his terms, and celebrating somewhere else is very much in the T.O. brand. Not giving these old codgers the satisfaction of grovelling and playing their game. Doing his own thing. I can kind of respect T.O. for that.
At the same time it’s also hard to not see this as another instance of him being kind of a giant baby turd. If being in the Hall of Fame is this important to you, then you should have actually tried to be less of a shit. TO could have have been a better teammate. This nonsense is all politics. The Hall of Fame is ultimately meaningless in the grand scheme of things, getting recognition will always be about appeasing those gatekeepers instead of some objective measurement. T.O. was always hyper scrutinized and many many times unfairly (A lot of his on field antics are hilarious and fun), but a lot of it was scrutiny he brought upon himself, too. He never seemed to make much of an effort to not appear like a selfish turd. When you act like that your whole career can you really be upset that people don’t take it well? It’s also not like this act of defiance is going to mean much. It’s probably going to justify to all the voters and haters about why they kept him out in the first place. No real change will come of this outside his small moment of pride in sticking it to the man.
I understand his desire to not give the old fogies of the HoF satisfaction of submission, but I also wonder if he’s not going to really regret not getting his chance at the podium with his gold jacket. Not many players get that opportunity and he deserved it, will his act of defiance hold the same sense of satisfaction years later, when he could have shared a stage with legends in a final moment and then just partied like a madman the next day? I hope he finds the same level of satisfaction in his own way.
Honestly I think I’m just bitter that I don’t get to see a Terrell Ownes HoF speech. Man that would have been so classic. I was hoping he’d pull a sharpie out of his gold jacket and sign his own bust’s head. Instead he’s just gonna be shirtless at a party somewhere. It will probably have an infinity pool. He’ll probably have a good time. But a chance at a once in a lifetime event will be missed for a fairly bleh act of defiance.
This is a strangely fitting act for TO though.
100% TO do you. The hall of fame is supposed to be about talent. You are arguably the second best (Sorry even though Jerry used stickem) he is still the best. But you are a first ballet hall of gamer. Them holding you out was wrong. By the way if you can run a 4.4 the giants need someone to help coach Odel
TO isn’t even the fourth best WR of all time. He’s very arguably not even in the top 5.
Rice, Hutson, Alworth, and Largent have very definite claims above Owens. Moss is pretty unarguably the better talent with a worse work ethic; their other “issues” are pretty much a toss-up. Calvin Johnon arguably had more talent, but a much shorter career. Fitzgerald has a better work ethic, and is a better teammate, but is probably an inferior talent. So take those last four, and mix them up in whatever order you want for the #5-8 slot, and Owens is somewhere in there. If you’re going by most talented, I think it goes Rice, Hutson, Moss, Megatron, Alworth, Largent, Owens. If you’re going by careers (and adjust for limitations of time and teams), Rice > Hutson > Moss > Alworth = Largent, Owens > Fitz > Megatron.
But there’s pretty much no metric out there by which Owens unseats Hutson or Rice, and I can think of none that allow him any higher than #5 without ignoring time/rules/teammates issues.
I love me some Steve Largent but I never would consider him better than TO, where is this definite claim coming from

Compare Largent to WRs of his era, and Owens to WRs of his era. Let’s exclude Rice for both, since, y’know, Rice.
Largent broke records that had stood for 40+ years. He began his career when mauling the WR was not only allowed, but expected, and finished it where it was still much more allowed than it is today. Largent had maybe 3 years with a top-ten QB on his roster; Owens had Steve Young, McNabb (who I think is over-rated, but is a stat machine), and Romo. Largent had maybe 4 years with a top-tier defense; Owens had maybe 4 years without one. Largent *never* had another WR on his side. Owens… had Rice for a while, and had some talent beside him in Dallas. Largent had 3 years with a moderate-or-better RB to take pressure off. Owens consistently had top RB talent with him.
When you compare them to other WRs of their eras, Largent was clearly better than Owens– and he did it with far, far worse teams supporting him. I cannot think of any player, with the exception of Barry Sanders, who performed at the level that Largent did with the absolute lack of talent and coaching around him. And until Rice erupted on the scene, Largent was the undisputed best WR in the game.
It’s somewhat difficult to compare players from different eras, but I’m pretty darned confident in putting Largent as historically better than Owens with all of that in mind.
In my opinion, Rice, Moss, and certainly Fitz are all better than TO. But Fitz is still playing. So, he’s out. TO at his best was scary good. And very deserving to be the conversation of “among the best”. He’s a head case though. And truth be told, if he hadn’t been, it’s possible he would’ve blended in to the background quicker than he should have. I’m still holding out hope that he shows up in the most TO way, does the most TO thing ever, and steals the show.
Cry baby distraction acts like a cry baby and distracts from the other people in his HoF class. Sounds like the most TO thing ever.
They were fully justified in keeping him out for a little while. TO doesn’t have the records Moss has or the rings(and records) like Rice. They are both clearly in a class above and it’s too bad that TO’s ego is blown so far out of proportion that he couldn’t see that. We’ve always known that about TO though, the guy got himself run off the best team he was ever on after they won through the playoffs while he was on the bench with an injury. Humility and gratitude are clearly not in his personality.
Welcome to the Hall of Fame, go fuck yourself
Bout time
“In fact, forget the blackjack!”
Beat me to it!
You’re probably right Dave, though I did see a few people write that it could be about cost. He might not have wanted to throw some huge expensive party in Canton. Jerry Jones spent 16 mil on his last year, though that’s obviously the super high end.
One of the articles I read is that the inductees old team often pays of helps out with the cost, but TO doesn’t really have a single team.
His statue should be really ugly
I’ll never forget his Tony Romo “He’s my teammate. My quarterback. *sob sob sob*” speech. It’s unfortunate we weren’t GIF-ing things back then.
I want TO to parachute into the ceremony, kick Roger Baddell in the junk, and then spend the next 15 minutes dodging security.
It won’t happen, but it’s what’s happening in my mind.
TO would drop the pass

there, now it’s a blanket statement for any controversial player to get elected in the future (A-Rod, Manny being Manny, Ray Rice, Johnny Manziel… ok, just kidding on that last one)
i cant bring myself to care about anything to related, good or bad
less attention worthy than deflategate imo
hahahaha right in his face, amazing. I love your comics, so funny.
Keep up the good work!
