Why Did Marcus Peters Get Traded?
Well that was a shocker. I don’t think a single person took the “Chiefs looking to trade Marcus Peters” rumors seriously at all. I sure didn’t. Why would a team give away one of their best young players? Peters has had a few minor incidents but nothing that makes him seem like a monster. Peters is one of the best young defenders in the game right now, why would you give that away?

Andy Reid must think he’s playing 6D chess or something. I’m real confused.
I have a co-worker who sits across from me who is a massive Chiefs fan. The news broke his day and he is just as confused as I am. It’s very strange. I understand moving on from Alex Smith. Smith is old and we’ve seen his ceiling. Peters is young. Do the Chiefs not have cap room and want to get what they can from Peters before he leaves in free agency? But they would have cap room, they don’t have Smith now and some of their older players would be gone by the time Peters got paid.

Can a Chiefs fan who is smart, like, kind of rationalize it for me? There’s no reason to go full rebuild yet why are they doing this? I can’t figure out the reason. As of this writing I have no idea what they are getting in return. I’m expecting a 1st, a mid-late rounder this year, and then a 2nd or 3rd next year. But I don’t know shit.
Chiefs got lucky the Jonathan Martin thing happened like 2 hours later because we’re all just talking about that now instead of this nonsense. I’m gonna wait on that story a bit because…jeez.
As a Chiefs fan, this makes no sense unless you think that our owner, a daddy’s boy like no other, is worried the racist fans from backwoods Missouri would cancel their tickets because of the anthem protest. This has seriously made me reconsider following the Chiefs. It’s inexplicable unless the Chiefs get a Herschel Walker-type haul for him.
If that was the reason Peters was traded, as one of the fans who did leave because of the protests, I can say it’s really stupid. Most of us that were going to leave because of the protests have already left for good and are either waiting for XFL2 (even if the football will barely be above cfl-level at best), or are only watching college football (or Arena in my case).
The only reason I’m even still here is because this comic makes me chuckle.

I’m gonna guess Peters asking to be traded, along with the fact he was a locker room issue was the main reason.
But until we get more details the chiefs look stupid for doing this considering they had him locked up for 2 more cheap seasons and his 5th year option plus a franchise tag potentially.
I heard them talking about the rumors on the radio a few days ago, and they discussed why the rumors may actually be true, and they made a few good points.
To start off, Marcus Peters getting suspended last year wasn’t because he threw the flag, it’s because he got in a fight with one of the coaches on the flight home from that game. It’s been fairly well known that he doesn’t see eye to eye with his defensive coaches, and generally doesn’t like being in Kansas City.
That being the case, then you look at his contract. He has one year left on his rookie deal, with a club option for a second. If he really doesn’t want to play here, then we may franchise tag him once, but if that happens, then he’ll REALLY hate playing here. If the relationship gets that toxic, how hard is he really going to play for us? So we have a window of probably 2 years with Peters, 3 years at the absolute maximum.
Do we think we can contend for a Super Bowl in that time period? Well, it mostly depends on how confident they are in Patrick Mahomes. Since we’ve effectively spent 2 first round picks on him, unless he dies or gets charged with murder, he’s going to get at least a 2 year leash. If they expect him to step in year 1 and throw for 4000 yards, 30 TD’s and 6 INT’s, then the Super Bowl is certainly a possibility. The more realistic approach is to expect him to have a decent, but mistake-ridden season with a TD/INT ratio closer to 1.5 but still high enough that it instills hope for the few years afterwards.
If the front office doesn’t believe that 2018 is going to be the year, we’re really looking at having one season, 2019, where the Mahomes/Peters train can roll into the Super Bowl. That would be the most likely reason the Chiefs fielded offers for him. If they got an offer that is worth one year of Super Bowl contention with him, then it makes sense to go for it.
They compared the situation to the Royals of the past 8 years. The only reason we had the success that we did in 2014/2015 is because all of our young guys happened to grow up through the minors at the exact same time. When they all peaked, that’s when the front office threw money at the team to get them to the World Series. After we won the World Series, we haven’t even made it back to the playoffs. This trade is basically the equivalent of trading Moustakas/Hosmer at the end of the 2016 season.
It all boils down to this: if the Chiefs’ ultimate goal is to get to a Patrick Mahomes era Super Bowl, and Peters told the front office that he didn’t want to be in KC when his contract his over, then this trade came about simply because we drafted him a few years too early.
Just randomly going through the archive a year later, and found this comment amusing. If SmartyPants would have been happy with 4000 yards, 40 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions; then I bet he/she was ecstatic over what actually transpired. Which was 5097, 50, and 12 respectively.
Welp, just happened to run across this more than a year later, and I gotta say I’m preeeetty happy with the whole Mahomes thing nowadays hahaha.
Every time I come across any article where they say something about Mahomes being an NFL and Super Bowl MVP or that the Chiefs are 100% the team to beat in 2020, or some shit like that, my first thought has always been “man I really wish I could send this article back in time to July 2018 me and see what his reaction was”.

Chiefs are getting Kendall Fuller in the Alex smith trade so if they can get a haul for peters why not take it?Especially if he is a locker room issue. Fuller is a great young cb in his own right so not a huge loss. Assuming they get multiple high draft picks with the draft being something Andy Reid is good at doing, Look out for the chiefs in 2-3 years. In my opinion I view peters as a top corner who tends to be over aggressive in going for the ball which gives him great int numbers but tends to make him inconsistent and prone to big plays when Eric Berry isn’t there to bail him out.
That’s true. I forgot about the addition of Fuller. So to me, it kind of evens out enough to make it ok. They move a guy who didn’t seem interested in staying long term. No sense in letting a toxic atmosphere simmer in the locker room while breaking in a second year QB. If it doesn’t work out with trading him, they can always use that as a way to buy them time to overcome any growing pains Mahomes experiences.

I can’t guess what the Chiefs would want from the Rams, to trade him to them. Aaron Donald didn’t sign a new deal with them yet, IIRC(besides, even if Donald did, as good as Peters is, trading the reigning DPotY for him would be… ludicrous), and besides him I don’t think the Chiefs would want any of the Rams’ strong players. You wouldn’t need Gurley when you have Hunt, or Goff when you’re planning to use Mahomes, etc.
…Is this a one-on-one trade for the Rams’ 1st-round pick in the upcoming draft? The only thing I can think of at the moment considering I remembered the Chiefs don’t have a 1st-round pick this year.
Bar that, the only other possibility would be a bunch of lesser-known players, or a bunch of lesser picks, in which case I’m somewhat doubtful whether this is a good idea.
It’s been confirmed that no other players are involved in the deal, it’s strictly draft picks. They wanted Robert Quinn in the trade, but they couldn’t come to terms with that.
Haven’t really seen anyone address the rumors I’ve heard yet.
From what I understand Peters was not going to stick around and sign a contract after his rookie deal. He requested a trade after the Titans loss. There was some buzz about the fans yelling racists stuff at him during the season because of the anthem protests, and I think that is part of it.
Peters’ heart is in Oakland, he’s friends with Marshawn Lynch, and I believe part of his Beast Mode brand. That’s why of all the teams that were interested the 49ers and the Rams were mentioned. In the end, the Rams were the team that actually wanted him.

There are three things that Andy Reid has an extreme knowledge about. Those things are quarterbacks, blowing leads, and CBs. I think that Reid actually had a reason for trading Peters. Maybe he was a cancer in the locker room, or had an injury the media didn’t know about. Right know, we’ll just have to see.
Basically, I think it came down to two things. Peters was a locker room problem and had multiple incidents where he yelled at coaches, including Bob Sutton during the game. More than that though, Chiefs didn’t view Peters as a stable enough personality to give the kind of contract he was going to command. Once they decided not to extend him, they wanted to get compensation while Peters still had some value. On the surface, Peters doesn’t look that bad, but it’s pretty telling that only two NFL teams were really interested in trading for him.
Did you draw this a while ago? Because there’s been very clear reports that he asked for his way out of KC. Dude wanted out as soon as we lost to the Titans. He hates our DC and literally tried to fist fight him, got into a verbal spat with another, very visibly stopped buying in and generally acted out of control. Peters clearly gave up on the team, wanted out and to put the cherry on the asshole top wasn’t even nice enough to let us have any leverage in trading him since we had no leg to stand on. We either dumped him off cheap or had somebody who did the shit he did before being disgruntled now stuck on our team.
So basically tldr. Peters gave up on us and we had to dump him before his cancer became even more cancerous.
