Ryan Fitzpatrick Meets Jameis Winston
He can’t keep getting away with it!
Seriously how do teams keep giving Ryan Fitzpatrick money? How is this still a thing? Ryan Fitzpatrick has entered his 12th year in the league. 12 years. That’s how long this dude has been around. It’s kind of amazing, but yeah, he was a 7th round draft pick by the St. Louis Rams in 2005. A team that doesn’t even exist anymore!
The creepiest part of the Fitzpatrick Cycle is that he always gets his starting job the same way: the guy ahead of him gets hurt before he shows up and plays good enough to get paid before going pumpkin. He replaced Jamie Martin on the Rams. He replaced Carson Palmer on the Bengals. He replaced Trent Edwards on the Bills. He replaced Jake Locker on the Titans. He replaced Geno Smith (jaw incident) on the Jets. Every single QB he’s replaced has gone on to a damaged career afterward. (Only Palmer has recovered somewhat, after several years in hell). Sure, maybe those QBs were all bad (Palmer was for a stretch), but maybe…Ryan Fitzpatrick is a damn voodoo curse.
So if I were a Bucs fan, I’d be terrified for Jameis. He’s the best prospect Fitz has backed up to this point, and he looks like the Bucs future. But now there feels like a very likely chance that by the end of the year we will be talking about how Fitzpatrick lead the Bucs within inches of the playoffs (he’s incapable of actually reaching the playoffs) after Jameis tore his two ACLs. Then he’ll either get paid by the Bucs to stick around as Jameis rehabs into a bad QB like every victim, or another team will pay Fitz money to be their QB, and the cycle begins anew.
The Bucs had such promise. It’s a shame to see it end like this. Remember this comic if the cycle continues.

Didn’t Fitz back up Schaub in Houston before he dropped off a cliff?
No, Schaub’s backups were Yates and Keenum.
No, he started in Houston, lost his job to Ryan Mallett, then Mallett got hurt & Fitzpatrick came back & threw 6 TDs against the Titans. He got hurt later that year against the Colts & so did Savage, which resulted in Yates & Keenum coming back. The Texans still won 9 games that season.
At the end of the 2017 season, Fitzy’s lifetime earnings will exceed $54 million.

Fitzy keeps getting jobs because he’s a team player, learns the playbook quickly because he’s so smart (did you know he went to Harvard? – every coach) and he can get you through a pinch if you need him to. Basically a dream backup.
That’s bs. Football is about skills for the sport, not how “clever” you were to make it to one of the “best” colleges…
Fitzpatrick clearly has the skills for the sport, Just watch his 2015 film and ignore every other snap of him.
Chris Chandler apparently has the record for most teams started for (8), even though people count the LA Rams and the STL Rams as two different teams when they do so. If you combine them and say he started for 7 different teams, that means Fitzy has a chance to tie him if he starts for the Bucs at some point this season. Then Fitzy can make NFL history in 2019 when he has to fill in for an injured Kirk Cousins.

Gonna be even creepier if the cycle progresses to the letter: Fitz plays fantastic, Bucs barely miss playoffs, Bucs refuse Winston’s fifth-year option, Fitz makes bank and gets named the starter for the new season too, Fitz proceeds to bomb the 2018 Bucs season, Fitz gets cut, disgruntled Winston leaves for a different team, Bucs are left without a QB.
