The Battle For Fort Elite Moneys Heats Up
So the other laugher contract that was given so far this free agency was to Dolphins pass rusher Olivier Vernon. The Giants came into free agency with a lot of cap space, a lot of holes on the roster, and a GM with a seat so hot his butt has 3rd degree burns. So it was inevitable that some players were bound to get some fat stacks. But after overpaying Janoris Jenkins and Snacks, they gave Olivier Vernon obscene money. And yeah, Vernon is technically getting more guaranteed money than the best player in football.
I’m glad the Giants managed to get Vernon. He’ll probably do real well before he goes on IR week 6 because Giants. We needed a more reliable player across from 8 Fingers than Robert Ayers who left to the Bucs. On paper, Vernon – Snacks – Hankins – JPP is actually a pretty solid line and might fix our biggest problem from last year. Of course the Giants still have a grand canyon hole at safety and linebacker, and #2 WR but PROGRESS. We’ll probably be less mediocre. So basically still mediocre. I expect playoff contention till week 15 and then we drop a horrible game to the Eagles but because we had mild PROGRESS everyone sticks around and we get all up in that mediocre biz in 2017.
In other news, to my reader optimists, what’s that like?
Even though I’m a Steelers fan, I’m really sadden by that Ravens’ corner passing away
It really doesn’t matter if you’re a fan of a team or not, it’s depressing by default.
This is the time of the year when players get overpaid. Its not because they are the best player in football, or even their position, its because teams don’t want to allow another team to pick up that player, and feel the burn when he becomes a superstar.
Shouldn’t we know that you should account for previous work more, over potential. If we did, no free agent, with a few exceptions, would have got mega paid. They instead, would have got small test contracts.
Lets apply this to incoming rookies. Ask any draft analysis about a player, and they will say “OH yeah he will dominate the game, he will change the game.” Yes there might be a few, but shouldn’t we be more cautious with rookies, given that they played a lot of sub-par players and teams.
Lets be clear there are some players that deserve a huge contract, but more often or not, they get over paid, because teams don’t want to miss out on a player, even though that player is injury prone, or out right sucks.
As a Dolphins fan, let me tell you who Vernon is. He is a hard worker. He is relentless and never gives up on a play. That’s about it for positives. He is not particularly athletic. Most of his sacks are coverage sacks, cleanup sacks, or on the quarterback, and they come rather late in the down. He also had a few bad penalties, dirty plays that could have been avoided. He cost us the Jags game with a roughing the passer against Bortles and his absolutely unnecessary dive at Mariota’s knee gimped him for the rest of the season.
All that being said, he is still a productive player, and I still like him. As long as he has someone else on the line drawing double teams (perhaps JPP or Big Snacks), he can even get to double digit sacks. He’s done it before. I hope he does it again for the Giants. Especially if he can sack Brady in the Super Bowl.
I actually think Vernon would work out very well in New York
Thats what we said with Jonathan Casillas and J.T. Thomas
Enjoy Vernon until he commits a silly penalty on 3rd and 10 after you sack whatever trainwreck is running the Eagles offense, which gives them a new set of downs, and they score in short order.
Source: last several years of watching Dolphins games.
The year we get rid of Coughlin is the year we get a guy who could be special if he was more disciplined.
Vernon needs a few more things to be special than just discipline. He didn’t start with the boneheaded penalties every other game until this season.
Tray Walker shoutout in the next one? Could be in Baltimore sports heaven with Johnny U wondering why Modell isn’t there. Pan to him in hell = first energy Stadium for forever million years
Is the Modell shot really necessary? I’m not a fan of the guy, I hate when any team moves and I’m not too fond of the owners who move them, but something this tragic isn’t an occasion to bog down by attacking others, even if they deserve it.
Humor is one of the oldest and most effective coping mechanisms
tray walker only had two total tackles
it was a tragic incident but i mean really
i’d rather see a comic about the Cleveland dumpster fire
Now, really. Calling the Cleveland situation a dumpster fire is an insult to good, hardworking dumpster fires everywhere.
So? Jovan Belcher sucked ass but his death was still a tragedy
I still need to see Pacific Rim.
I don’t really know what optimism feels like. I never thought I would be this worried about the season after winning the Super Bowl.
Come over to the dark side. We have lots of optimism over here. A dark optimism, sprung from our dark lord Belichick. This will be a great season. So come on over – we all float down here.
Funny cause it’s true.
Every time I look at JJ Watt, it pisses me off that he didn’t win 2014 MVP. Aaron Rodgers, to his everlasting credit, had a great season. But he had done better, and no one was talking about Aaron Rodgers. Everyone was talking about JJ Watt. But when they went with Rodgers, it was a firm statement that every Non-Qb player was a second class citizen. Now, to be fair, the quarter back gets his hands on the ball every snap, and no other player does. But in that case, why have an MVP position in a sport set up that way? Why not just have a PositionOTY for every position?
At least you aren’t a Chargers fan
wondering when your team will invest in some offensive linemen to protect your 92 Million dollar QB
Oh, we do invest. We just invest badly. (See: Gaither, Jared.)
My heart sinks every time I think of JJ Watt (and living 45 minutes from Houston that’s a lot. He’s a demigod around here). Everyone else is using their hypothetical time machine to kill Hitler so I’ll use mine to travel to 2011 and convince the Jags to draft JJ Watt and not Blaine Gabbert.
Don’t you think cruz can e our #2? real question, i’ve been trying to figure it out in my mind, cause my heart loves him, but i don’t really know if he’ll be health enough
it doesnt have that black message thingy
