Marcus Mariota Gets Drafted
Hey, look! A Titans comic that isn’t a joke about how nobody remembers the Titans! PROGRESS! Now that they have Super Mariota they might even get some actual media coverage. I’m not sure how to feel about Mariota as a Titan overall, though. From what I’ve read he doesn’t fit Ken Whisenhunt’s system, he’s already far from a sure thing considering the system he played in at Oregon, and he will have a suspect O-line blocking for him. I also don’t know who their RB is, which isn’t a good sign. I can name most starting RBs.
*Googles Titans RBs*
Bishop Sankey? Jackie Battle? Leon Washington? Shonn Greene? oooof.
There is also the concern that the Titans were being offered some mega trades for that second overall pick, and if those trade offers were true, I think the Titans were kind of foolish to pass them up. The Titans need far more than just a QB and letting the Browns or Eagles give up half a draft for a QB who doesn’t even fit your system sounds like a good idea to me. If Marcus flames out, the Titans missed a HUGE opportunity. They seemed okay with Mettenberger last year, why not give the selfie kid another year, see if he gets better? After yesterday, he wants out. So the Titans alienated their presumed backup QB prospect in the move. Overall, the Titans better hope Marcus pays off, because right now things look pretty iffy. I hope Mariota is good though, I like him and wish him well.
As for the rest of that first round, what a snorefest. No exciting trades. No crazy reaches. Safe lineman picks all over the place. Nothing terribly laughable, outside maybe the Colts ignoring their defense and drafting another WR, something they didn’t need whatsoever. The Rams picking Todd Gurley with no one to block for him seemed silly too. The Jets aced it and that defense is going to be absolutely terrifying next year.
I’m fairly happy with the Giants draft so far. Flowers was a reach at #9, but he’s got a lot of potential if he can improve his slow footwork. Landon Collins isn’t exactly the type of saftey we needed, but we needed literally anything at safety so getting the top prospect was good. Big-O from UCLA was a steal in the third, a lot had him ranked as a low first rounder.
I saw the Titans once. They were playing a football game, and I pulled out my camera to get a picture, but my thumb was in front of the lens and now nobody believes me when I tell them.
I don’t get it. The Browns offer them two first-rounders, there’s no way they’re fielding a competitive team with how many holes they have unless Mariota’s Luck-esque as a rookie – unlikely given how much more pro-style Harbaugh’s Stanford offense was – and Mettenberger showed the things you like in a developing QB(Pocket mobility, willingness to take a hit to deliver a pass, calm decision making even when he got splattered, etc.). What you can fix with #12 and #19 is so much more than you can fix with Marcus Mariota.
Also Mariota isn’t going to be able to get #8 without arm wrestling Ryan Succop, current #8 Titan, former Mr. Irrelevant, and latest edition to the Muscular Kickers club(https://instagram.com/p/2JK3m1LISP/).
So Mariota is about to vanish into the void, until he ends up with the Ravens in about 10-12 years
Why with the ravens? As a ravens fan I don’t get it.
Steve McNair ended up with the Ravens for a few years after basically being the Warren Moon to Tennessee’s Houston.
Hopefully Mariota’s post-football life has a happier conclusion. 🙁 Steve’s death still tears me up.
As a Titans fan, I like Mariota but if the reports are close to true, I don’t like the pick. If the Eagles were really interested in giving up close to what was reported, they should’ve taken that deal. Only reason I see them passing is because no one else they wanted would’ve been around. The Browns deal would’ve been much better and I wouldn’t have blinked twice on it. Apparently they don’t think Mettenberger is worth developing.
I don’t think the Titans truly need Mariota, unless they’ve already given up on Mettenberger. I was hoping they’d go for a defender but seeing as they put Marcus under so much scrutiny I didn’t bat an eye when he was picked.
I’m getting sick of hearing that Winston has had off the field problems, because the crab leg shoplifting was justified and the rape was alleged from what I remember.
The fact is that if you have the chance to draft your franchise QB, you do it. THATS why everyone was selling half their draft to get mariota. If you get THE guy, your team is set. You simply need to build around him. Your entire career as a coach and GM gets easier, and your job security is very solid. No one is clamoring to get Mettenburger.
Feel bad for Mariota. Like the Titans, he will never be noticed by the media ever again. Pretty much what the Titans have been. Such a shame too since I already had a nickname for Marcus that goes by the name “Mar-Mar Ocho”. Farewell, my sweet prince.
I hope Mariota works out. But I’m afraid if he doesn’t, here goes another 5-10 years in NFL limbo. I would have rather had the Titans trade down for more picks (to plug our many holes in both offense and defense).
Isn’t that how it always goes when picking a QB? If it works, you’ve got someone to build around for the next decade. If it doesn’t, you’ve got a minimum of five years to get another chance at picking one, probably with a coaching change or two in between.
Who’s everyone’s pick for the Barkevious Mingo Award this year? Nice to see some competition this year after Ha-Ha Clinton-Dix pissed it in 2014. For me it’s a close run thing between Jaquiski Tartt and Owamagbe Odighizuwa.
Excuse me, it’s not the Barkevious Mingo Award, it’s the Prince Amukamara Award 😛
I love toilet humour
Since the draft ended, I have one prevailing thought: The AFC East is going to be the defense division.
Buffalo’s gold standard line, the Jets with their newly drafted pieces, A boy named Suh in Miami, and Evil Belichick’s ministry of defense in Foxboro.
Someone better ready the ice packs. If Orton was still there, I’d say ready the Jack D.
Ummm let’s say Carolina had a reach Denvers was the biggest wtf and and kind of Steelers like they really needed DB not more pass rushers which they could’ve gotten later or a Cneter for Cleveland who has one of the top 3 center or his second position tackle which they also have a top 3 tackle (LT not RT) anyways I was somewhat miffed cuz I planted a big Chip Kelly FU to someone and get Mariota but clearly the football God wanted chip to keep his defense
