CARTOON BETS WEEK 14: D’OH
The Simpsons was the pivotal show of my childhood. We didn’t have cable so I was stuck with the basics, and our FOX affiliate would re-run the show at 7:30 every night and I’d watch it before bed as a kid. I’m still amazed my parents let me get away with that. Maybe they knew I wouldn’t actually get a lot of the more sophisticated humor. I had the first 10 seasons on DVD, I could quote the show on command through high school, I had those thick episode recap books and plenty of other merchandise. My mom got me a Simpsons Christmas ornament every year. I watched the show well into season 14, when they started to use some digital techniques, and it felt like the show…changed. I have a lot of opinions on the Simpsons. I’m mostly just sad to see what it has become. Nothing should run this long. It’s slowly mutated into something different like 4 times over now. While the IP was always a marketing juggernaut and it always had a fair share of cringe stuff, something about the show now under Disney feels so wrong. I have not yet watched the “Simpsons” broadcast as of writing, but I’m positive it will be absolutely cursed.
Anyway I didn’t manage to keep my undefeated streak, but I still had a good week.
Patented Staffordburgers, old family recipe!
For Buffalo burgers?
Well I’m from Albany, and I’ve never heard of them.
Well, no, it’s not an Albany thing.
Steamed L’s!
ahh revenge feels so sweet
And you call them steamed rams despite the fact that they obviously won.
I suspect I’m not the only one who’s got their childhood encapsulated by the first half of that paragraph, basically an identical story minus all the merch
I was hoping that you could have written a comic about the moron that bet 3 million dollars on the philly game and losing (was so close too) but alas. However the banner flying over the giants game “Mr. Mara enough, plz fix this dumpster fire” is comedy gold and definitely needs a cameo in a future comic if you can swing it. I personally am envisioning a giants player paying the pilot. You can take this idea or burn it as desired. 🙂
I’d be stunned if the Banner thing doesn’t feature in this week’s comic. Especially in what felt like a relatively hijink-free week of football. Some good games, but I can’t think of many other weird/funny headlines from this week
I haven’t actually watched any new Simpsons episodes an a very long time but I’ve heard the show is aally on kind of an upswing recently.
Early Simpsons (first 10-12 seasons) were so good in part because they actually made good stories about the Family. The humor was fast, dense, and smart, but the stories themselves were heart-warming at their core (James L. Brooks was very influential in making sure this was the case; there’s a reason he was such a successful TV producer). “Marge Be Not Proud” is probably my favorite of all time, party because I was so close to my mom. The episode is hilarious (Thrillho is one of my favorite sight gags of all time), but the transformation of Bart and Marge’s relationship from beginning to end almost makes me tear up.
Poochie Pederson is perfect, you should just keep him this way from now until he’s actually fired. (If ever.)
More of a Gill Gunderson, isn’t he?
This is one of those weeks where I hoped you had lost more, because these are great.
TE Man partying in the Chicago secondary! Oh yeah!
you do simpsoids very well. these def cracked me up. good work!
